MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women’s indoor track and field team is hosting its lone home meet of the season this week. That is the only home event scheduled for NMU teams. Both basketballs begin a four-game road swing while hockey travels to Nebraska. Swimming and diving and Nordic skiing are also back in action.
Both basketball teams kick off the week with a game at Lake Superior State Thursday (Jan. 21). The NMU women’s team (10-5, 7-3 GLIAC) hits the court first at 5:30 p.m. which will be followed by the men’s (7-7, 4-6 GLIAC) game at approximately 7:30 p.m. After a day off for travel the Wildcats hit the hardwood at Saginaw Valley State Saturday (Jan. 23) afternoon for a 1 p.m. start for the women’s game and an approximately 3 p.m. tip off for the men’s game.
The women’s basketball team, 3-2 in its past five games, has a road record so far this season of 6-3. The men’s hoop team will be looking to snap its three-game skid and are .500 percent on the road this season with a 3-3 mark.
Hockey (10-8-6, 6-6-4-1 CCHA) jumps on the bus to Omaha, Neb. for a Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series against the Mavericks. The two teams met in Marquette Nov. 20-21 as the ‘Cats took both games by scores of 5-1 and 6-3. This time around the teams will play Friday and Saturday nights (Jan. 22-23) with the puck dropping each night at 8:05 p.m.
The NMU indoor track and field team hosts, the Northern Challenge, Saturday (Jan. 23) inside the Superior Dome. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. This is the lone opportunity to catch the NMU team in action in Marquette this season. Admission is free for the event. Competing at the meet will be the NMU women’s team and the NMU men’s club team. Also competing will be the men’s and women’s teams from Lake Superior State, Northwood, St. Norbert and the Michigan Tech club teams.
The NMU women’s swimming and diving team off a trip to Cocoa Beach, Fla. will swim in its first meet of the semester Friday and Saturday (Jan. 22-23) at the UW-Stevens Point Invite. Both Nordic ski teams are back on its collegiate schedule after competing at the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Anchorage, Alaska in early January. The men’s and women’s teams are at the Central Super Tour event in Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 23-24).
