SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women’s indoor track and field team competed in its second event of the season Saturday at the Lake State Classic. No team score was kept in the competition.
Brittnee Balbierz and Catherine Angeli took the first two places in the 55-meter dash with times of 7.59 and 7.64 respectively. In the 200 it was the other way around as Angeli was first (27.16) with Balbierz second (27.35). Becky Rotter with a time of 1:02.53 was second in the 400 with teammate Rachel Williams third (1:02.68).
The 800 saw two Wildcats in the top three with Erin VanEnkevort second (2:23.63) and Maegan Hendershot third (2:25.16). Nora Kiilunen led the NMU contingent in the 1,600 with a second-place showing (5:39.81). Kristen Hoklas was sixth (6:03.73) in the event.
NMU had the top six runners in the 3,000. Kristen Schulz led the way with a clocking of 11:09.86 as she was followed by Olivia Juntila (11:29.49), Rita Woitas (11:29.54), Cara Crawford (12:08.8), Brittney Goodwillie (12:22.01) and Brittany Loomis (12:22.83).
Bailey Franklin placed second in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.28 with teammate Melissa Christensen third (9.52). IN the 4x400 relay NMU had three relays in the event. The “C” relay of Franklin, Rotter, Colby West and Rachael Williams won the event with a time of 4:21.72. Next was the “B” relay of Balbierz, Brooke Granquist, Hendershot and Katrina Lamanky as they ran a 4:23.06. In third place was the NMU “A” relay of Mariah Beaman, VanEnkevort, Kiilunen and Angeli with a time of 4:24.83.
In the field events Kayleigh Coulson tied for first in the high jump with a leap of 1.60 meters. Franklin was next in third place (1.57m). Three other ‘Cats were in the high jump as Granquist and Erin Astle tied for fifth (1.52m). Christensen with a leap of 1.37m tied for eighth in the high jump. Throwing for NMU in the shot put were Beaman as she was third (11.40m), Christensen seventh (10.12m), Franklin ninth (9.09m) and Granquist 11th (7.42m). The ‘Cats had two throwers in the weight throw as Krista Squiers was second (16.68m) and Beaman eighth (10.63m).
The ‘Cats will host its lone home meet of the season, the Northern Challenge, Saturday (Jan. 23) inside the Superior Dome.
