Hillsdale Rains Three-Pointers On Men's Basketball
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team fell behind the Chargers of Hillsdale College at the half (41-27) as the squad only shot 43 percent in the second half and dropped the game Saturday afternoon to the Chargers (78-62). Hillsdale was 14-25 in three-pointers (56 percent) for the game.
NMU falls to 7-7 overall on the season and 4-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Hillsdale improves to 3-11 and 3-7 respectively.
Hillsdale jumped out to the lead the beginning of the game. NMU tied the score at 11-all on a jumper by Jared Benson at 13:42. The Chargers held a seven-point lead 18-11 (10:03) before the ‘Cats chipped away. Mylan Murphy’s three-point play cut the lead to 18-14 then he made back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 18-all with 7:16 left in the half. NMU went over two minutes without a score as Hillsdale held a 25-18 lead. Benson broke the drought with two free throws at 4:51 (25-20). Hillsdale stretched the lead to double-figures for the remainder of the half.
The second half the Chargers built its lead to 20 points 52-32 with about five minutes gone. Benson made a lay-up at 11:28 for a 58-40 score. Austin Rowe’s three-pointer made the count 75-58 with a little less than three minutes left in the game. Mark D’Agostino made the score 76-62 with his lay-up towards the end of the game. That would be the final score for the ‘Cats.
Raymont McElroy led NMU with 15 points with Chris Warner adding 13. Rowe off the bench had 10 points. Luke Laser and Brent Eaton each had 27 points for the Chargers. McElroy added four assists while Benson had a team-high eight rebounds.
NMU was 23-55 from the floor (41.8 percent). The ‘Cats were 2-18 from three-point land (11.1 percent). Rowe made both three-pointers. From the charity stripe the ‘Cats were 14-21 (66.7 percent).
The ‘Cats are on the road for its next four games. Next week the squad is at Lake Superior State (Jan. 21) and Saginaw Valley State (Jan. 23).
