Explosion At The Berry Events Center

MARQUETTE, Mich. – There were two kinds of explosions at the Berry Events Center Friday night. The first explosion was the six goals the Northern Michigan University hockey team scored against the Bowling Green State University Falcons. Four of NMU’s goals were scored on the power play.   The Wildcats ended up taking the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) game with a shutout, 6-0, for the team’s third shutout of the season.
In the third period the second explosion came when the ‘Cats were whistled for nine penalties for 29 minutes while the Falcons were called for 11 penalties for 44 minutes. For the game NMU had 16 penalties for 43 minutes while BGSU registered 17 penalties for 56 minutes. The tally for the game was 33 penalties for 99 minutes.
With the win the ‘Cats improve to 10-8-5 overall and 6-6-3-0 in the CCHA. The Falcons are now 3-18-2 and 2-13-2-2 respectively.
NMU recorded at least one goal in each period. The first period saw the ‘Cats take the 1-0 lead on Tyler Gron’s fourth goal of the season at 4:08. Assisting on the goal were Ray Kaunisto and Greger Hanson. About eight plus minutes later (13:02) the ‘Cats took the 2-0 lead when Andrew Cherniwchan scored his third marker of the season on the power play.   Kyle Follmer and TJ Miler assisted on the goal.
Hanson scored two of the three goals in the middle frame. His first goal of the period and seventh of the season was scored at 5:05 on the power play. Erik Gustafsson and Jared Brown assisted. A little less than five minutes later Hanson scored again for his eighth of the season at 9:51 to make the score 4-0. Gron and Kaunisto assisted on the goal. The third power-play goal of the night was scored by Mark Olver at 12:22 for a 5-0 score. Assisting on Olver’s 12th goal of the season were Hanson and Gustafsson. 
Kaunisto added a lone marker in the final frame at 11:05 for the final score of the night (6-0), which was also on the power play. Phil Fox and Billy Smith assisted on Kaunisto’s 10th goal of the season.
Four ‘Cats ended the night with multi-point games. Hanson led the way with four points on two goals and two assists. Kaunisto had three points on a goal and two assists. Gustafsson and Gron each had two points. Gustafsson recorded two assists while Gron had a goal and an assist.
Brian Stewart picked up his second shutout of the season as both have been registered within the past four games. It was his eighth of his career. Stewart had 23 saves in the game. It was broken down with three in the first period, seven in the second and 13 in the third. BGSU played two goaltenders in the game. Andrew Hammond started the game as he gave up five goals in a little over 32 minutes of play. Nick Eno played the remaining minutes as he gave up one goal.
NMU ended the game with 35 shots to 23 for BGSU. The ‘Cats were 4-8 on the power play while the Falcons were 0-8. In the first period the ‘Cats outshot the Falcons 12-3 then added 14 in the second period and nine in the third. 
The two teams will play the back end of the weekend set tomorrow night (Saturday, Jan. 16) with the puck dropping at 7:35 p.m. at the Berry Events Center.
