MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s basketball teams are both on the road this week looking to extend their winning streaks. The NMU women’s team knocked off the top ranked team in NCAA Division II Saturday (Jan. 2) with a 53-47 win at Michigan Tech.
Both the men’s (6-4, 3-3 GLIAC) and women’s (8-3, 5-1) basketball teams travel to Ohio this week for a pair of games. Thursday, Jan. 7 the teams will be in Tiffin, Ohio taking on the Dragons of Tiffin University. The women’s game is set for 6 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at approximately 8 p.m. After a day off the ‘Cats face the Eagles of Ashland University Saturday (Jan. 9). Action begins at 1 p.m. with the women’s game which will be followed by the men’s game at approximately 3 p.m.
The NMU women’s team is currently riding a four-game winning streak and is tied with Michigan Tech for first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division. Both NMU and Tech have 5-1 conference records. On the other side, the NMU men’s team is looking to extend its three-game winning streak.
Two other teams are still competing away from Marquette. The NMU men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams are in Anchorage, Alaska competing at the 2010 ConocoPhillips U.S. Cross Country Championships through the end of the week. Currently on a training trip to Cocoa Beach, Fla. the NMU women’s swimming and diving team will take a break from training with a rescheduled meet against Lock Haven and Edinboro University Wednesday, Jan. 6. The team will also return to Marquette at the end of the week.
