ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Northern Michigan University women’s Nordic ski team currently has two days in at the 2010 ConocoPhillips U.S. Cross Country Championships.
The first event was the sprint freestyle competition. Christina Gillis led the NMU contingent with a 12th-place finish (3:21.23). Monica Markvardsen was next for the Wildcats with a time of 3:23.40 for 29th. Laura DeWitt was 32nd (3:28.35) while Ingrid Fjeldheim placed 40th (3:30.36). Libby Ellis was 51st (3:34.82) with teammate Karmen Whitham next in 93rd (3:46.39). Caitlin Cassidy finished 98th (3:47.89).
The second event on the schedule was the 10K freestyle competition. Leading the NMU skiers was Gillis as she covered the course in a time of 32:24.7 for 34th. Two spots back was DeWitt in 36th (32:29.0). Markvardsen with a time of 32:59.3 was 44th. Fjeldheim crossed the finish line with a clocking of 33:45.7 for 55th. Next for the ‘Cats was Ellis in 67th (34:04.8). Whitham was 107th for NMU with a time of (36:06.5). Cassidy was 122nd overall as she finished covering the course in a time of 37:14.5.
There are two more days of competition at the championships. Wednesday (Jan. 6) the women compete in the 20K classic mass start and then Friday (Jan. 8) the final day of the competition it is the classic sprint qualification and finals.
