MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Could the Northern Michigan University hockey team begin its annual second half surge? Saturday in the first game of the Dodge Holiday Classic being held at the University of Minnesota the Wildcats scored two goals in each of the first two periods to defeat Clarkson 4-0.
NMU improves to 8-8-4 overall on the season while the Golden Knights fall to 4-11-2.
Phil Fox put the ‘Cats on the board with his third goal of the season at 4:06 of the first period. Justin Florek and Mark Olver assisted on the goal. Olver then picked up his second point of the game with his 11th goal of the season at 18:24 of the frame. Florek picked up his second assist of the game.
Jared Brown made the score 3-0 with a power-play goal at 5:35 of the middle frame for his seventh marker of the season. Erik Gustafsson and Greger Hanson assisted on the goal. Chad Pietila scored the ‘Cats final goal of the contest at 6:17 for his second of the season. Tyler Gron and Mike Maltese were given the helpers on the goal.
Brian Stewart picked up his first shutout of the season and seventh of his career with the win. He turned away 29 shots. NMU outshot Clarkson 37-29. The ‘cats were 1-4 on the power play while the Golden Knights were 0-5.
The ‘Cats face the University of Minnesota tomorrow night (Sunday, Jan. 3) at 8:07 p.m. in the final game of the Dodge Holiday Classic.
