MIDLAND, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team snapped it three-game skid Saturday afternoon with an 81-72 win over the Northwood Timberwolves. NMU was down by three points at the half (36-33), but held the Timberwolves to 28.6 percent shooting (10-35) from the floor in the second 20 minutes of play. The win also give the ‘Cats the season series against the Timberwolves with a win in early December at the Berry Events Center (75-58).
NMU is now 4-4 overall on the season and 2-3 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Northwood falls to 6-2 and 3-2 respectively.
About half way through the first half Marc Renelique and Austin Rowe scored back-to-back baskets to give the ‘Cats a 14-11 lead. With the score tied at 16-all (8:30) NMU got three free throws in a row from Marc Renelique (two) and Chris Warner (one) for a 19-16 score at 7:06. With the score tied at 23-all with 5:25 left in the half, Raymont McElroy gave the ‘Cats a 25-23 lead with a jumper at 4:56. Northwood rattled off six points for a 29-25 lead with a little more than three minutes left in the half. NMU had the Northwood lead down to two points (30-28) at 1:58 on an Eric Hawley lay-up. The Timberwolves scored six points the remainder of the half while the ‘Cats got points from Renelique and a three-pointer from Hawley before the buzzer.
Northwood controlled the first 10 plus minutes of the second half and had a lead as large as seven points (55-48). Renelique canned both ends of his free throws at 9:56 to have the ‘Cats within two points (57-55). McElroy also made both free throws next, after the Timberwolves made one of two, and Renelique made a jumper a less than a minute later for a 59-58 NMU lead. Over the next four minutes the score went back and forth as neither team took over as the score was tied three times in the span. NMU took over the lead for good after Sebastien Salois drained a three-pointer at 4:49 for a 68-65 game. NMU held the Timberwolves without a point for about a three minute stretch. McElroy sank both of his free throws with 42 seconds left in the game to give NMU a 74-67 cushion. The Timberwolves had the score down to three points (75-72) with 29 ticks left on the clock. Renelique and Hawley sank two free throws each with seconds left in the game for the final margin.
Renelique led NMU in the scoring column with 25 points, all off the bench. McElroy added 18 points while Jared Benson had 13. McElroy also added five assists and two steals. Lionel Sullivan had 25 points to lead the Timberwolves. Warner and Hawley each had nine rebounds to pace the ‘Cats.
For the game NMU was 27-59 from the floor (45.8 percent). The ‘Cats drained 6-21 three-point shots (28.6 percent). NMU attempted 34 free throws and made 21 (61.8 percent). Off the glass the ‘Cats had 47 rebounds to 42 for the Timberwolves.
After taking a little break for Christmas the ‘Cats are back in action Dec. 29 in a non-conference game against Bemidji State.
