MARQUETTE, Mich. – The lone home event on the Northern Michigan University athletic schedule this week is a basketball doubleheader Saturday. Three other teams hit the road to different parts of the U.P.
The NMU hockey team (6-6-4, 5-4-3-0 CCHA) will conclude the first half of Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play with a weekend set in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. against the Lake Superior State Lakers. NMU and Lake Superior State are playing for the Cappo Cup. The puck will drop each night (Dec. 11-12) at 7:05 p.m. inside Taffy Abel Arena. NMU is coming off a weekend split against the Michigan State University Spartans.
Saturday (Dec. 12) the place to be will be the Berry Events Center. The NMU men’s (3-2, 1-1 GLIAC) and women’s (4-2, 2-0 GLIAC) basketball teams will be taking the court to face the Huskies of Michigan Tech. Action gets underway with the women’s game at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men’s game at approximately 7:30 p.m. The MTU women’s team is the top ranked team in NCAA Division II women’s basketball. The NMU women are perfect so far this season in conference play. Last week the NMU men’s team split its first two conference games of the season with a win against Northwood and a loss to Wayne State.
It looks as if the NMU men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will finally get its season started this weekend. Last weekend’s event in Marquette was called off because of a lack of snow. Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 12-13) the teams will be skating at the MTU Challenge.
