MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team held a 36-31 halftime lead against the Wayne State Warriors Saturday afternoon at the Berry Events Center. The second half saw the Warriors hit 50 percent from the floor en route to a 67-60 win.
With today’s loss the Wildcats fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). WSU improves to 4-1 and 2-0 respectively.
The ‘Cats were rolling the first four plus minutes of the game. Mylan Murphy’s tip-in gave the home team a 10-4 lead at 15:41. After the Warriors cut the lead to two points (17-15) the ‘Cats went on a 5-0 run on a jumper by Raymont McElroy and a three-point play from Austin Rowe (22-15). With the score 26-23 with a little over six minutes left in the half the ‘Cats used a 7-0 run for a 33-23 advantage. McElroy accounted for four points during the run. NMU’s final score of the half was a three-pointer by Marc Renelique at 1:07 (36-30).
WSU took over the lead at 18:26 of the second half (38-37). A three-pointer by Jared Benson and a lay-up by Murphy gave the ‘Cats a 42-38 score. Murphy’s tip-in at 15:30 gave NMU the 46-41 lead. WSU took the lead over for good at 49-48 with 12:11 left in the game. NMU had it down to two points with 5:32 left on a Rowe jumper (56-54). NMU’s last hope was a Benson lay-up with a little over three minutes left in the game (59-56).
Three ‘Cats ended the game in double-figures with Benson leading the way with 13 points, McElroy and Murphy each had 12. Bryan Wright led the Warriors with 18 points. Murphy had his first career double-double as he added a game-high 12 rebounds.
NMU ended the game by shooting 22-51 from the floor (43.1 percent). The ‘Cats were only 2-9 from the arc (22.2 percent). From the free throw line the ‘Cats were 14-19 (73.7 percent). Rebounds were even at 33 for each side.
NMU will be back in action a week from today (Dec. 12) against Michigan Tech at the Berry Events Center at 7:30 p.m.
