GOGEBIC, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team opened up the 2009-10 season on the road Sunday. NMU faced Northland College, but the game was played at Gogebic Community College. The Wildcats jumped out to a 43-15 lead at the half and cruised to a 65-32 win. It was the season opener for both squads.
After Christa Erickson made her third three-pointer in a row, NMU had a 14-2 lead about five minutes into the game. Kellie Rietveld gave the ‘Cats a 20-4 lead when she made a jumper with eight minutes gone in the game. After Carla L’Esperance made both of her free throws with under two minutes left before halftime the ‘Cats enjoyed its largest lead of the first half (43-12).
Angie Leckson canned a jumper seven plus minutes into the second half to give the ‘Cats a 58-20 lead. Holly Cole’s three-pointer with about five minutes left in the game gave NMU the 63-25 lead.
Erickson and Rietveld led the ‘Cats with 17 and 14 points respectively. Erickson was a perfect six-of-six from the floor which included five-of-five from the three-point line. Leckson and Powers led the ‘Cats on the boards with six rebounds each.
For the game NMU was 25-52 from the floor (48.1 percent). From the arch the ‘Cats were 12-20 (60 percent). NMU made five trips to the free throw line and sank three of its throws (60 percent). NMU outrebounded Northland 47-18.
The ‘Cats stay on the road for its next two games. First up is an encounter at Minnesota-Duluth (Nov. 24) and then a trip to Wisconsin-Parkside (Nov. 28).
