ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team unofficially opened up the 2009-10 season Saturday night against the University of Michigan in an exhibition game. NMU trailed 51-25 at the half and dropped the game by a 97-50 count.
Marc Renelique led the Wildcats with 11 points and six rebounds. Jared Benson and Raymont McElroy added seven points each. DeShawn Sims led the Wolverines with 22 points as he also added 10 rebounds for the double-double. Manny Harris had a triple-double for UM with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
For the game the ‘Cats shot 30.9 percent from the floor (21-68). NMU was 6-31 from three-point range (19.4 percent). The ‘Cats only went to the free throw line six times during the game and made two of the throws (33.3 percent). UM had 20 more rebounds than NMU on the night with a 48-28 count.
NMU will begin for real against UW-Green Bay Wednesday night (Nov. 18) at 8 p.m.
