SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Two first period goals gave the Northern Michigan University hockey team an early 2-0 lead over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Saturday afternoon. NMU added another goal in the third frame and held on for a 3-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) win.
With the win the Wildcats improve to 3-5-1 overall on the season and 2-3-0-0 in CCHA play. Notre Dame is now 5-5-1 and 2-2-1-0 respectively.
Jared Brown turned the red light on first with his first goal of the season at 3:24 of the opening period. Kyle Follmer and Chad Pietila assisted on the goal. For Pietila it was his first collegiate point. Almost nine minutes later (12:11), Ray Kaunisto scoring his third goal of the season made the count 2-0. TJ Miller and Erik Spade assisted on the goal. The Fighting Irish cut the lead in half at 14:02 on a power-play goal by Kevin Deeth (2-1).
After a scoreless second period, NMU added an insurance power-play goal by Matt Butcher at 5:09 of the third period. Erik Gustafsson and Mark Olver assisted on Butcher’s first goal of the season. Calle Ridderwall tried to make it close with a marker for Notre Dame at 11:44, but that would be it for the scoring (3-2).
Brian Stewart picked up the win and first star of the game honors with 36 saves. Mike Johnson for Notre Dame had 15 saves. Shots were heavily in favor of the home team with a 38-18 advantage. NMU was 1-4 on the power play while Notre Dame was 1-5.
The two teams will play the back end of the weekend set tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, Nov. 15) at 4:05 p.m.
