ALLENDALE, Mich. – For the second time in less than a week the Northern Michigan University volleyball squad defeated the Grand Valley State University Lakers. Wednesday night it was in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Volleyball Tournament play. In tonight’s quarterfinal match the Wildcats took care of the Lakers in three straight (25-22, 25-21, 25-18).
NMU advances in the tournament with a 19-10 slate. GVSU falls to 16-12. The 'Cats will face the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals Saturday (Nov. 14) at 2:30 p.m. in the semifinals at Hillsdale. NMU and SVSU split during the regular season. Both matches went five sets. The Cardinals won on its home court (23-25, 25-13, 31-29, 23-25, 19-21) in September. The 'Cats won at home in October (25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 14-25, 15-9).
The ‘Cats had a very balanced attack offensively as no one had 10 or more kills for the match. Mandie Meyer recorded a team-high nine kills while Katt Garvick and Sami Vierk added eight each. As a team NMU had 41 kills in 117 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .171. NMU’s side out percentage was 65 percent in the first set (15-23), 61 percent in the second set (13-21) and 78 percent in the third set (15-19).
Abby Lovell contributed 34 assists and four digs. Becca Feuerherd had three of the six service aces on the night. Cassie Osiecki led the defensive effort with a team-leading 13 digs. At the net, the ‘Cats recorded one block solo and eight block assists. Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy and Sami Vierk led the ‘Cats with three block assists each.
