Cross Country Wraps Up 2009 Season

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The 2009 edition of the Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team is in the books. NMU turned in many fine performances as the team is fairly young and will use this season for experience looking towards the future.
NMU was second the first meet of the year which was the U.P. Collegiate Cross Country Opener at Michigan Tech. The Wildcats scored 37 points. Jenny Wiedmeyer (20:36.3) and Kristen Schulz (20:42.5) placed in the top 10 as they were eighth and ninth respectively.
Bibiane Mahy (19:38.1) led the ‘Cats to the team title at the Lake Superior State Challenge Cross Country Meet with 25 points. Mahy placed third overall at the event. Other top 10 finishers for NMU included Wiedmeyer (4th, 19:45.0), Olivia Juntila (6th, 19:48.0), Nora Kiilunen (8th, 19:49.8) and Maegan Hendershot (9th, 19:55.1).
The following week (Sept. 19) the ‘Cats ran the Midwest Cross Country Collegiate Championships which were held at UW-Parkside. As a team the ‘Cats finished in ninth place with 250 points. NMU was led by Mahy (19:30.5) and Wiedmeyer (19:33.8) with a 39th and 43rd finish respectively.
At the following event, the Roy Griak Invitational, the ‘Cats were sixth with 241 points. NMU had three runners in the top 50. Mahy led the way (21st, 23:51.49) as she was followed by Wiedmeyer (38th, 24:13.74) and Juntila (43rd, 24:22.49).
Wiedmeyer won the U.P. Collegiate Cross Country Championships in NMU’s lone home meet of the season. She covered the course in a time of 19:12.2. NMU took the team title at the event with 23 points. The ‘Cats had four other runners in the top 10. Schulz (3rd, 19:30.7), Juntila (4th, 19:36.6), Sarah Allen (8th, 19:51.3) and Kiilunen (9th, 19:54.1) all ran top 10 times. 
NMU ran to a seventh-place finish at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Cross Country Championships. The ‘Cats tallied 206 points. Three runners placed in a group as Mahy was 34th (23:36.3) as she was followed by Juntila 35th (23:37.6) and Schulz 36th (23:40.0).
In the final event of the season the ‘Cats were 13th at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships with 343 points. Juntila led the way with a time of 23:52 which was good for 36th
