OSHKOSH, Wis. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team dropped a close meet Saturday to UW-Oshkosh. In the end the Wildcats lost 120-117.
The first event of the day was the 200-yard medley relay as the Wildcats swam a 2:00.62 for a second-place finish. Members of the relay were Ashley Backman, Jenny Gallagher, Gena Haas and Kelsey Sipple. NMU went second and third in the next event which was the 1,650 freestyle as Elyse Sawka (19:22.51) and Sarah Cempel (19:52.90) placed for the ‘Cats.
The 200 freestyle saw Michele Kolin place second with a time of 2:08.26 while Lauren Cockels was fourth (2:13.12). Sipple won the following event the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.81 while teammate Haas was fourth (28.04). Lindsay Stedman picked up a win for NMU in the 200 individual medley as she touched the wall with a 2:23.78. Lindsay VanderBroeck was fourth in the event (2:31.52).
NMU went one-two on both boards. Kelli Vander Baan and Alison Black scored 225.45 and 223.35 points on the 1-meter. Then on the 3-meter the duo scored 235.25 and 215.00 respectively. The next swimming event saw the ‘Cats with three swimmers in the top four places. Hass won the 100 butterfly (1:06.63) as she was followed by VanderBroeck third (1:08.50) and Gallagher fourth (1:11.38). Sipple picked up another win this time in the 100 freestyle (56.75) with teammate Stedman third (58.56).
Backman swam a 1:03.70 in the 100 backstroke for a second-place showing. Cockels was fourth in the event (1:08.29). The 500 freestyle saw Sawka (5:44.15) and Cempel (5:50.44) go second and third respectively. Gallagher (1:17.04) and Stephanie Rogaczewski (1:23.09) were second and fourth respectively in the 100 breaststroke.
The meet then came down to the final event the 200 freestyle relay. UW-Oshkosh touched out NMU with a 1:48.80. NMU touched the wall with a 1:48.98 (Sawka, Kolin, Backman and Stedman).
The ‘Cats will not be in action for a couple of weeks. NMU’s next action is at the Calvin College Invite Dec. 3-5.
