ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team behind three players with 10 or more kills defeated the Grand Valley State Lakers Friday night in four sets. NMU won the first two sets (26-24, 25-21) before the Lakers took set three (21-25), but the Wildcats came back to take the fourth set and the match (25-17).
NMU improves to 18-9 overall on the season and 11-4 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Grand Valley State is now 15-11 and 10-5 respectively.
Mandie Meyer with 17 kills, Sami Vierk added 13 and Katt Garvick’s 11 led the ‘Cats on the night. As a team NMU recorded 56 kills in 160 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .162. The ‘Cats side out percentage was over 55 percent for each set. NMU was 15-25 (60 percent) in the first set, 12-21 (57 percent) in the second set, 15-25 (60 percent) in the third set and 10-17 (58 percent) in the fourth set.
Abby Lovell added 47 assists and 12 digs for the match. Garvick had four of the 10 service aces on the night. Cassie Osiecki and Meyer added 18 and 12 digs respectively. At the net the ‘Cats had six block assists. Emma Wolfe and GarvicK had two block assists each.
NMU will close out the regular season with a match at Ferris State tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.)
