HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team open up its 2009-10 season Saturday at Hillsdale College. NMU dropped the meet to the Chargers by a score of 135-90.
Sarah Cempel placed fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 20:00.90 in the second event. Michele Kolin in the next event was fourth which was the 200 freestyle (2:07.24). Kelsey Sipple was then second in the 50 freestyle (25.71).
Lindsay Stedman turned in a time of 5:14.21 in the 400 individual medley for a third-place showing. NMU swept the 1-meter diving in the following order: Alison Black (230.45), Kelli Vander Baan (210.15) and Kayla Walenta (189.50).
Genevieve Haas was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:07.76) with teammate Lindsay VandenBroeck next (1:09.51). Sipple came back to swim a 57.58 in the 100 freestyle for a fourth-place effort. Ashley Backman swam a 1:04.09 in the 100 backstroke for second in the event. Cempel swam the other distance event of the meet as she turned in a 5:48.00 in the 500 freestyle for third place. Elyse Sawka swam a 5:51.51 in the 500.
On the 3-meter board NMU swept with Vander Baan first (229.05), Black second (205.10) and Walenta third (195.35). Jessica Linnen won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:17.88 with teammate Jennifer Gallagher second (1:18.03).
NMU’s relay of Haas, Kolin, Backman and Stedman took the final event of the meet the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 1:50.59.
The Wildcats are back in action Saturday, Nov. 7 at UW-Oshkosh.
