Ito and Cowles set personal records
MARQUETTE – Two United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters brought home medals from the Criollo Cup Oct. 20-26 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Northern Michigan University post-baccalaureate student Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) won gold in all three of his competitions in the 105 kilogram weight class, including the snatch, clean and jerk and total events. He achieved a personal best for the total event. Ito also achieved a personal best and set a national collegiate record for the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 185, 195 and 201 kg respectively.
“I’m really happy for Collin because this is something he’s been going for ever since he began lifting and the last two and a half years I’ve coached him,” said head coach Andy Tysz. “I have always known he has the ability and finally all his hard work has paid off for him.”
NMU sophomore Sara Cowles (Daytona Beach, Fla.) competed in the 53 kg weight class and also set a personal best in the snatch and total event. She took silver in the snatch, clean and jerk and the total event with 65-, 83- and 148-kg lifts, respectively.
Tysz said, “I am very pleased with their performances and they exceeded any expectations I had for both of them. They performed great on and off the platform and did not let any outside factors hurt them physically or mentally.
