Greco-Roman wrestlers bring home medals from Sunkist

 

MARQUETTE – United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman Wrestlers competed in the Sunkist International Open Oct. 23-25 in Phoenix, Ariz. Ten wrestlers brought home medals.
            Finishing in first place were Northern Michigan University graduate student Nate Engel (St. Helena, Calif.) at 55 kilograms, who was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament; USOEC facility users Jacob Curby (LaGrange, Ill.) and Jake Fisher (Platte City, Mo.), 66 kg and 74 kg; and NMU junior Zac Nielsen (Zimmerman, Minn.) at 96 kg..
            “My guys wrested really well. It was really good seeing them represent the USOEC the way it should be represented. They took charge in their individual weight classes. Now I am really looking forward to the next competition and see how they react to tougher competition,” said head coach Dennis Hall.
Second-place finishers included NMU seniors Kerry Regner (Darlington, Pa.), 66 kg; Andrew Bisek (Chaska, Minn.), 74 kg; and junior Chad Hemerson (Monterey, Calif.), 84 kg.
 Bronze medalists were sophomore Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn.), 55 kg; freshman Ellis Coleman (Oak Park, Ill.), 60 kg; and sophomore Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Ariz.), 74 kg. 
NMU junior Jon Drendel (North Aurora, Ill.) competed in the 74 kg weight class, taking fourth in a decision against Aaron Briggs. NMU sophomore Pete Gounaridis (Leominster, Mass.) placed fifth in the 120 kg weight class.
