MARQUETTE, Mich. – It was Senior Day at the Northern Michigan University volleyball match Saturday afternoon against Lake Superior State. Two seniors led the charge in the five-set win over the Lakers. NMU won the first set (25-23) before the Lakers took the second and third sets (26-28, 23-25). The Wildcats came back to take set four (25-16) and the fifth set (15-11). It was the second day in a row the ‘Cats were pushed to the limit. NMU is now 3-2 in matches which have gone to five sets. The ‘Cats have now won four matches in a row and 10 of it past 11.
With the win and Grand Valley State being idle today the ‘Cats sit atop the GLIAC North standings. NMU improves to 16-8 overall and 10-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Lake Superior State falls to 3-21 and 2-11 respectively.
Two seniors led the ‘Cats as Mandie Meyer had a match-high 20 kills while Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy added 11. As a team the ‘Cats recorded 66 kills in 195 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .159. Assists were almost split evenly as Maddie Ogden had 28 as Abby Lovell ended the match with 25.
Three ‘Cats had over 10 digs for the match. Leading the way was Meyer with 14, Two more seniors, Rachel Green and Cassie Osiecki had 12 each. Andersen-Goldsworthy at the net had five block assists while Emma Wolfe and Katt Garvick (senior) had four each.
NMU will play a non-conference match Friday (Oct. 30) against Finlandia at 5:30 p.m. in Vandament Arena. The ‘Cats conclude the regular season with three matches away from Marquette. First up is an encounter at Michigan Tech (Oct. 31), then it is off to Grand Valley State (Nov. 6) and Ferris State (Nov. 7) the final weekend of the regular season.
