MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team played its first home game of the 2009-10 season against the Bemidji State Beavers Friday night. The Beavers used an extra-attacker goal with 10 seconds left in regulation and after a scoreless overtime period the score was 3-3.
NMU is now 1-1-1 on the season while Bemidji is 2-0-1.
Billy Smith scored his first goal of the year 1:30 into the opening period. Mark Olver assisted on the goal. The Beavers tied the score up a little over a minute later on a Jamie MacQueen goal at 2:51.
Ray Kaunisto added a power-play goal for his second of the year at 6:06 of the second period for a 2-1 lead for the home team. Kyle Follmer and Justin Florek assisted on the goal. Just minutes into the third period the Beavers answered with their own power-play goal at 3:18 by Jordan George for a 2-2 game.
Florek picked up his second point of the night with his first goal of the season at 13:18 for a 3-2 lead for the ‘Cats. Smith and Olver assisted. The Beavers pulled their goaltender and with the extra skater tied the game at three-all on a goal by Ben Kinne at 19:50. In the overtime period the ‘Cats had three shots to one for the Beavers.
NMU had 28 shots to 26 for the visiting team for the game. Power plays were the same at 1-6 for each side. Brian Stewart had 23 saves for the ‘Cats. Smith (1-1), Florek (1-1) and Olver (0-2) each ended the night with two points each.
The two teams will do it again Saturday night (Oct. 24) at 7:35 p.m.
