MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team held its only home meet for the 2009-10 season Saturday morning at the PEIF Pool. It was the annual Green and Gold Meet, which was won by the Green Team 116-108.
The Green Team won the first event, the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:58.42 (Ashley Backman, Olga Budiansky, Lindsey VandenBroeck and Kelsey Sipple). The Gold team then won the next three events as they took the 800 freestyle (Sarah Cempel, 9:26.06), the 200 freestyle (Michele Kolin, 2:09.14) and the 50 freestyle (Lauren Cockels, 27.17).
Hannah Bolger then won the 200 individual medley for the Green Team with a time of 2:23.42. Kelli Vander Baan took both boards for the Gold Team with a score of 222.60 on the 1-meter and 243.45 on the 3-meter. Lindsay Stedman then won the 100 butterfly (1:07.09) for the Gold Team before Sipple took the 100 freestyle (57.17) and Backman the 100 backstroke (1:05.22).
The Gold Team then won the next event the 500 freestyle (Cempel, 5:48.88) before Budiansky (1:10.81) captured the final individual event the 100 breaststroke for the Green Team.
The Green Team won the final event of the morning with a time of 4:02.86, Elyse Sawka, Jenny Gallagher, Bolger and Sipple won the 400 freestyle relay.
NMU will begin for real at Hillsdale Oct. 31.
