HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team opened up the 2009-10 season tonight at Michigan Tech. NMU took the early 1-0 lead before the Huskies rattled off three unanswered goals and never looked back to pick up a 5-3 win. It was MTU’s first game of the season also. Five of the goals were scored in the first period
Erik Gustafsson gave the Wildcats the 1-0 lead at 7:26 of the first period with his first goal of the season. Mark Olver and Andrew Fernandez assisted on the goal. The Huskies answered with three first-period goals by Brett Olson (9:18), Jordan Baker (13:36) and Olson again (17:42). With NMU trailing 3-1, Greger Hanson cut the lead to 3-2 with his first marker of the season at 19:45. Matt Butcher and Gustafsson assisted.
The second period went scoreless, but the third period saw Olson score his third goal of the night on the power play at 1:10 for a 4-2 lead. Malcolm Gwilliam also added a power-play goal at 14:12 for a 5-2 game. Brian Nugent registered his first goal as a Wildcat at 18:12 on an extra-attacker goal for the final score of the night. Erik Spady and Andrew Cherniwchan assisted.
MTU was 3-9 in power play opportunities while the ‘Cats were 2-6. The home team had a shot advantage at 34-18. Brian Stewart started the game between the pipes for the ‘Cats and recorded 29 saves in a little over 54 minutes of play. Reid Ellingson played a little over a minute, but did not record a save.
NMU will have a day off tomorrow (Saturday) before facing Minnesota-Duluth Sunday night (Oct. 11 at 8:07 p.m.) in Duluth for the second game of the Superior Cup.
