MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team hosting its lone home meet of the season Friday captured the U.P. Championships with 23 points as Michigan Tech was second (32), followed by Lake Superior State (87).
Jenny Wiedmeyer led the Wildcats as she won the event with a clocking of 19:12.2. Four other ‘Cats were top 10 finishers with Kristen Schulz third (19:30.7), Olivia Juntila fourth (19:36.6), Sarah Allen eighth (19:51.3) and Nora Kiilunen ninth (19:54.1).
The next wave of NMU runners included Katie Holway 14th (19:57.1), Cara Crawford 15th (19:59.4), Maegan Hendershot 18th (20:12.7) and Rita Woitas 19th (20:13.3). Brittany Goodwillie placed 21st (20:21.5) as she was followed by Stephanie Enderby 24th (20:36.5), Karmen Whitham 27th (20:50.6), Erin VanEnkevort 28th (20:58.1) and Ingrid Fjeldheim 30th (21:05.1).
Kirsetn Hoklas was 33rd (21:10.6), Brittany Loomis 35th (21:19.4), Monica Markvardsen 36th (21:20.1) and Jessie Krob 37th (21:20.7) also ran for the ‘Cats. The final set of runners for NMU were Brianne Gerlach-McDonald 40th (21:28.3), Kirsten Fjeldheim 41st (21:32.5), Caitlin Cassidy 47th (22:10.4), Molly Burger 48th (22:15.8), Rosie Frankowski 50th (22:21.3), Jackie Leow 51st (22:26.3), Sarah Cousineau 53rd (22:38.4) and Maria Hoffman 59th (23:17.8).
The team will have about two weeks off before competing again. NMU’s next competition will be at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Cross Country Championships Oct. 24 at Saginaw Valley State.
