MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University has home events Friday through Sunday on campus and in the surrounding area. It will be great way to see NMU student-athletes in action.
The NMU women’s cross country team begins the weekend by hosting the U.P. Championships Friday afternoon (Oct. 9 at 3 p.m.). Running will take place at the NMU Golf Course. The start/finish line will be at the ninth green. NMU has been regionally ranked all season and are ranked eighth in this week’s poll. This is the lone home event for the team.
Soccer (5-5-1, 3-3-1 GLIAC) hosts Grand Valley State and Ferris State Friday (Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.) and Sunday (Oct. 11 at 12 p.m.) respectively. The ‘Cats have ready faced the Lakers and Bulldogs this season on the road. NMU lost to Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. 4-0 Sept. 18 and defeated Ferris State Sept. 20 by a score of 3-2 in Big Rapids, Mich. Dana Stephens leads the team with six goals.
Football (4-1, 4-1 GLIAC) will put its home unbeaten streak on the line Saturday (Oct. 10) at 1 p.m. NMU will face the Warriors of Wayne State University. In the ‘Cats two previous home games this season they shutout their opponents with a 62-0 win over Tiffin and a 34-0 decision over Ferris State. The NMU defense has not allowed a rushing touchdown this season. NMU leads the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in several categories including, scoring offense (37.6 avg/g), scoring defense (11.8 avg/g) and total defense (273.0 avg/g). All children in eighth grade and below will be admitted free to the game.
Hockey will kick off its season with the Superior Showcase. NMU will travel to Houghton, Mich. to take on the Huskies of Michigan Tech Friday night (Oct. 9 at 7:07 p.m.) and then after a day off will hit the ice in Duluth, Minn. against the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth Sunday (Oct. 11 at 8:07 p.m.). In the history of the Superior Showcase the ‘Cats have yet to defeat the Bulldogs. The Point (100.3 FM) will carry the games live.
Volleyball (10-7, 6-3 GLIAC) continues with its road trek. This week’s stops are at Wayne State in Detroit, Mich. Friday night (Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.) and then it is off to Northwood in Midland, Mich. Saturday (Oct. 10 at 4 p.m.). The ‘Cats have won its past four matches in a row. Mandie Meyer leads the team with 233 kills (3.48 k/s).
The men’s golf team will conclude the fall portion of its schedule at the Motor City Invitational in Detroit, Mich. Sunday and Monday (Oct. 11-12). The ‘Cats are coming off a ninth-place finish at the GLIAC Men’s Golf Championship.
