MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University football, volleyball and soccer teams hit the sky and road this week.
The football team opens up the 2009 campaign with a noon clash at Northwood University Saturday (Sept. 5). NMU is coming off a 2-8 campaign for 2008. The Wildcats return over 40 letterwinners. NMU defeated the Timberwolves last year in Marquette to open up the 2008 season.

NMU volleyball (3-1) coming off a three-win performance last week at the Wildcat Open fly to the West Coast to take part in the Triton Invitational Sept. 4-5 in San Diego, Calif. The tournament will be taking place at UC-San Diego. NMU faces Cal State-Dominguez Hills and the host school Friday (Sept. 4) at 3:30 and 8:30 p.m. respectively. Saturday (Sept. 5) the ‘Cats face Cal State-LA and Cal State-San Bernardino at 2 and 6 p.m. respectively. NMU will be led by this week’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week Mandie Meyer.
The NMU women’s soccer team (1-1) is off to Minnesota for two games over the Labor Day Weekend. Saturday (Sept. 5) the ‘Cats are in the Twin Cities to tangle with Concordia-St. Paul at 1 p.m. After a day off the ‘Cats face the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth Monday (Sept. 7) at 2 p.m.
