MARQUETTE, Mich. – Classes begin Monday at Northern Michigan University. That means a start to the NMU athletic year. 
Saturday (Aug. 22) football will hold its second scrimmage at 9 a.m. The scrimmage will be held in the Superior Dome. Across the way at 11 a.m. the 2009 NMU soccer team will take on an alumni team at the NMU Soccer Field.
Monday (Aug. 24) begins a busy week for the NMU volleyball squad. The first event on the schedule is the green and gold match Monday at 7 p.m. Later in the week the Wildcats host the Wildcat Open (Aug. 27-29). NMU will face UW-Parkside Thursday night (Aug. 27) at 7 p.m. Friday (Aug. 28) the ‘Cats host St. Cloud State (1 p.m.) and Winona State (7 p.m.). Saturday (Aug. 29) NMU faces Minnesota-Duluth at 7 p.m. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday with the final match each day beginning at 7 p.m. Matches will be held in both Vandament Arena and in the Auxiliary Gym.  Passes for the tournament are currently available at all NMU Ticket outlets, by calling 906-227-1032 or on-line at
Other teams participating in the tournament are Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech and UC-San Diego.
After Saturday’s game the NMU soccer team goes on the road to begin the 2009 season. The ‘Cats are at St. Joseph’s Aug. 28 (Friday) and Indianapolis Aug. 30 (Sunday). 
The NMU cross country team heads to Houghton Friday (Aug. 28) for the U.P. Collegiate Cross Country Opener.
