BAY CITY, Mich. – Northern Michigan University was selected 10th in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Football Coaches’ Poll. The head football coaches of the GLIAC chose Grand Valley State, defending league champions, to win the 2009 football title in preseason balloting.
The league’s 12 head coaches participated in the balloting, but were not allowed to vote for their team. The first-place team on each ballot received 11 points, while second received 10 points, etc. The poll was released today in conjunction with the league’s football media day which was held at the Doubletree Hotel in Bay City, Mich.
The Lakers picked up 121 points and 11 first-place votes to claim the top spot. Ashland was second in the balloting with 107 points and received the lone remaining first-place vote.  The Eagles were second in last year’s GLIAC football race. 
Michigan Tech with 94 points was selected third in the balloting. Wayne State (89) finished four points ahead of Saginaw Valley State (85) for fourth and fifth respectively. Next was Hillsdale College with 71 points for sixth place.
The biggest gap in the balloting came between the seventh and eight spots as Ferris State (66) had a 15-point edge over Indianapolis (51). 
The University of Findlay edged the Wildcats for ninth place. The Oilers picked up five more points than the ‘Cats (38-33) in the balloting. The final two spots belong to Northwood (24) in 11th and Tiffin (13) in 12th place.
NMU opens the 2009 campaign at Northwood on Saturday, Sept. 5 at noon. The following week (Sept. 12) the ‘Cats have its home opener against Tiffin at 4 p.m.
