MARQUETTE, Mich. – Former Northern Michigan University hockey player, Nathan Sigmund, has been named to the United States InLine National Team which will compete at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) InLine Hockey World Championship in Ingolstadt, Germany, June 6-13. He is one of the four newcomers to the squad of 16.
Sigmund concluded his NMU career during the 2008-09 season. The San Diego, Calif. native appeared in 106 games during his career for the Wildcats, registered five goals, 12 assists for 17 points.
The 2009 IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship will include 16 teams divided into Top Division and Division I. The United States will compete in the Top Division along with Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, Slovenia and Sweden. Division I will consist of Australia, Austria, Brazil, Chinese Taipei, Great Britain, Hungary, Japan and South Africa.
For the preliminary round, the two divisions will each be divided into two groups of four teams based on rankings (Top Division-groups A and B, Division I-groups C and D). Following round-robin play within each group, the two lowest ranked teams from the Top Division and the two top teams from the Division I will face off as part of play-in games to determine pools for the playoff round. Playoffs starting with the quarterfinals and placement games will be played both in the Top Division and in Division I.
The U.S. will begin play at the championship against the Czech Republic Sunday, June 7. The next day (June 8) the U.S. faces Canada and then Sweden on Tuesday, June 9. The qualification round is set for Wednesday, June 10 with the playoff round (Thursday) June 11. Friday, June 12 is the semifinal round with the medal round Saturday, June 13.
