MARQUETTE— Members of the Unites States Olympic Education Center’s Greco-Roman wrestling team will compete at the FILA Junior World Team Trials May 22-23 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The winners of this competition will earn spots on the U.S. Junior World Team competing in the FILA Junior World Championships in Ankara, Turkey, in August.
Greco-Roman wrestling coach Ivan Ivanov sees advantages in the competition.
“There aren’t many tournaments where younger guys get to compete against people their own age,” said Ivanov. “A true junior level [17-20 year-old level] tournament is rare so this will be a good gauge of where they stand and it’s an opportunity to compete against other wrestlers at the same level.”
Northern Michigan University freshman Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.) will compete at 50 kilograms; sophomore Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn.) will hit the mat at 55 kg; freshman Alex Fleming (Sterling, Va.) and junior Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah) will wrestle at 66 kg. Rounding out the team will be freshmen Corey Hope (Carol Stream, Ill.), Ryan Hope (Carol Stream, Ill.), Jonathan Drendel (North Aurora, Ill.) and sophomore Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Ariz.) at 74 kg.
The competition was preceded by a five-day training camp held in Colorado Springs.
“The camp is very flexible,” added Ivanov. “It gives the guys a chance to get used to the environment, and to warm up for the competition. No one is pushing very hard; they’re just maintaining strength and getting ready for the weekend.”
