MARQUETTE — The United States Olympic Education Center has named 16 athletes to the All-Academic Team for their performances during the winter 2009 semester.
Greco-Roman wrestlers filled six spots: Northern Michigan University post-baccalaureate student Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio); seniors Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah), and Chaz Betts (Chaska, Minn.); junior Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.); sophomore Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Ariz.); and freshman David Arendt (Port Washington, Wisc.). They are joined by two women’s freestyle wrestlers, sophomore Lindsey Brooks (Houston, Texas) and freshman Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas).
Speedskaters making the All-Academic team include senior Cherise Wilkins (Syracuse, N.Y.), junior Levi Kirkpatrick (Hills, Iowa), sophomores Kyle Carr (Atlanta, Ga.) and Tamara Frederick (Park Ridge, Ill.) and freshmen Kristen Biondo (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Dan Fiorenza (Wausau, Wisc.).
Wilkins has found the key to success in speedskating and in school.
“It’s all a balancing act, school and training,” said Wilkins. “You’ve got to prioritize. It’s nice to have the support and recognition for not only athletics but academics at the USOEC. You wouldn’t get that training a lot of other places. They really want you to do well here.”
USOEC weightlifters rounding out the All-Academic team are NMU graduate student Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) and sophomore Robin Feuerman (Altamonte Springs, Fla.).
