MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s Nordic ski team recently held its awards banquet and the following student-athletes received awards for the 2008-09 season. Voting was done by the coaches and student-athletes for the awards.
Martin Stuge Banerud and Phillip Violett shared the Most Valuable Skier Award. At the NCAA Central Region Championship, Banerud won the 10K classic race with a time of 29:58.9 while teammate Violett (30:14.4) was third. Both skiers were All-Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) first team selections and competed at the NCAA Skiing Championships. Banerud, placed 11th in the 20K freestyle race at the NCAA event and was named the NCAA Central Region Male Athlete of the Year.
Sindre Stokke and Kevin Cutts both took home the Freshman Skier of the Year Award. Both skiers were in the top 15 on the CCSA points list for the 2008-09 season.
Tim Cook received the Most Improved Skier Award. Cook was an All-CCSA first team pick. The final award, the Team Choice, was given to Justin Singleton. Singleton participated at the NCAA Skiing Championships and was selected to the All-CCSA first team.
