Wildcats Final Tune-up Before GLIAC Championships
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Northern Michigan University women’s track and field team held its final tune-up Saturday (April 25) at the Marquette Twilight Meet before competing at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships later this week at Hillsdale College (April 29-May 1). NMU picked up wins in the 100-meter hurdles, the 4x100 relay and in the triple jump to collect 115 points to take second in the team race behind Marquette’s 155.
Catherine Angeli (13.35) and Brittnee Balbierz (13.37) went second and third respectively in the 100 for the ‘Cats. Bibiane Mahy with a time of 2:24.43 placed third in the 800 while teammate Erin VanEnkevort (2:29.22) was seventh.
The 1,500 saw NMU with three runners in the top six. Leading the way was Rebecca Holmquist (4:59.98) fourth, Jenny Wiedmeyer (5:00.31) fifth and Kristen Schulz (5:03.80) sixth.
Natalie Bertucci won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.58. Teammates Bailey Franklin (16.96) and Melissa Christensen (18.14) were third and fifth respectively in the event. Michaela Jacobs took third in the 3,000 steeplechase as she crossed the finish line with a time of 12:20.45.
The NMU 4x100 relay of Balbierz, Christensen, Angeli and Bertucci ran a 49.71 to capture the event.
The field events saw Erin Astle and Bertucci tie for third in the high jump as both had a 4-09.75. Franklin (4-09.75) was sixth in the event.
Christensen (35-01.25) and Franklin (35-01.00) had the top two results in the triple jump. Angie Leckson with a throw of 41-08.75 in the shot put placed fourth. Paris Malin led the ‘Cats in the javelin with a throw of 104-06 which was good for fourth place. The next place in the results belonged to teammate Krista Squiers with a result of 101-03.
