MARQUETTE, Mich. – Kelsey Deacon hauled in four awards at the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball awards banquet. She walked away with the Most Valuable Player, Playmaker of the Year, Free Throw and Coach’s Awards.
Deacon was a second team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division selection for the 2008-09 season. She led the Wildcats this past season in scoring (16.3 ppg) and assists (3.0 apg). Deacon was the lone Wildcat to average over 10 points a game for the season. In the GLIAC, Deacon ranked third in scoring and 14th in assists. She averaged 35.6 minutes a game which was third in the conference as she started all 28 games for the ‘Cats. Deacon played every minute in eight games this past season. From the free throw line Deacon was 73-of-80 for .913 percent which led the GLIAC. Deacon made 69 of her shots from beyond the arc to lead the ‘Cats as she was third in the GLIAC in the category. She ranked 14th overall in the GLIAC in three-point field goal percentage (.356) and ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2).
Sophomore, Erin Powers, with her 142 rebounds (5.1 rpg) received the Rebound Award. The Defensive Player of the Year went to Cassie Hegbloom. During the 2008-09 season, Hegbloom had 88 rebounds, nine steals and two blocks. Brynn Larsen was handed the Newcomer of the Year Award. Larsen appeared in 26 games and averaged 3.9 ppg and 2.7 rpg.
