MARQUETTE – Members of the United States Olympic Education Center weightlifting team competed in the 2009 National Collegiate Championships April 17-19 in Shreveport, La.
Northern Michigan University senior Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) took first place at 105+ kilograms . Ito recorded a snatch of 155 kg and a clean-and-jerk of 195 kg, totaling 350 kg and setting a personal record. “Collin made the record we were looking for and knew it was in his grasp,” said weightlifting coach Andy Tysz.
Two NMU athletes brought home silver medals in their respective weight divisions. NMU freshman Jessica Gallagher of Longwood, Fla., lifted 69 and 85 kg in the snatch and clean-and-jerk, respectively, in the 63-kg weight class. She completed the competition with a total of 154 kg. Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.),competing at 77 kg, lifted 126 kg in the snatch and 150 kg clean-and-jerk, finishing with a total weight of 276 kg.
Facility use athlete Breanne Carlson finished fifth place in the 53 kg weight class. Carlson lifted 51 kg in the snatch and 56 in the clean-and-jerk, earning her a 107 kg total. Carlson beat her personal record by 10 kg in the total.
“Everyone competed well and we’re pleased with the results we came back with,” said Tysz. “The competition was a good tune up.” The USOEC weightlifters will compete again June 4-7 at the Senior National Championships in Chicago.
