MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Northern Michigan University announces the Athletes of the Month for March. Erik Gustafsson from the hockey team was selected the Male Athlete of the Month while Laura DeWitt from the Nordic ski team was named the Female Athlete of the Month.
Gustafsson, a sophomore from Kvissleby, Sweden, during the Wildcats playoff run had one goal, five assists for six points. As a team the ‘Cats went 5-2-0 during March. Gustafsson scored his lone goal of the month against Michigan State on March 6 in the first-round of the playoffs and also picked up a helper the same night. He recorded two assists against Miami in the second round on March 14. His second assist of the game against the RedHawks was to Gregor Hanson for the game-winner in overtime. Gustafsson picked up awards from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) as he was a first-team selection to the All-Conference Team and was named the CCHA’s Best Offensive Defenseman. He had an assist on NMU’s lone goal against Notre Dame in the semifinals of the CCHA Tournament at Joe Louis Arena.
DeWitt, a junior from Rhinebeck, N.Y., was a first-team selection to the All-Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Team. Competing at the NCAA Central Regional the beginning of the month, DeWitt won the 5K classic race (17:33.4) and was third in the 10K freestyle (33:28.4). DeWitt at the NCAA Skiing Championships was 17th in both the classic (15:04.6) and freestyle races (40:17.7).
