MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Northern Michigan University announces the Athletes of the Month for February. Brian Stewart from the hockey team was selected the Male Athlete of the Month while Bailey Franklin from the indoor track and field team was chosen the Female Athlete of the Month.
Stewart, a junior from Burnaby, B.C., was 4-1-1 during the month with a 2.29 goal-against average and a .939 save-percentage. He was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Goaltender of the Week for his play against Miami (Feb. 20-21). Stewart stopped 89-of-91 shots in the 2-1 win and 1-1 tie (shootout loss) against the RedHawks. He earned first star honors each night as he had 43 saves Friday night and 46 Saturday. Stewart began the month with a 3-0 shutout against the Bowling Green State University Falcons as he had 28 saves and then 43 saves the next night in a 4-1 win.
Franklin, a freshman from River Falls, Wis., helped lead the NMU indoor track and field team to a fifth-place finish at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships by winning the triple jump (36-05.00). At the GLIAC event she also placed third in the pentathlon with 3,173 points, sixth in the high jump (5-03.25) and eighth in the long jump (16-11.50). She recorded new NMU records in the triple jump and pentathlon. During the month, Franklin won the triple jump (34-10.50), was second in the high jump (5-00.00) and long jump (16-09.25) at the Lake Superior Challenge.
