MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team will get to keep the Cappo Cup in Marquette on the strength of a 4-3 win over the visiting Lake Superior Lakers Saturday night at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats swept its fourth series of the season, which all have occurred in 2009.
With the win NMU improves to 14-15-5 overall on the season and 11-12-5-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Lake Superior falls to 10-18-8 and 7-15-6-1 respectively. “I like the way we responded,” said Walt Kyle. “I liked our goals.”
Andrew Fernandez gave the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season at 15:03 of the opening period. Mark Olver and Nick Sirota assisted on the goal. NMU scored two goals in a row in the second period, for a 3-0 game, at 7:55 (power play) by Tyler Gron and then at 10:56 by Olver. “We wanted to get pucks deep and try to battle,” said Olver. Assisting on Gron’s second goal of the season were Tim Hartung and Erik Gustafsson. Billy Smith and Blake Cosgrove assisted on Olver’s 13th goal of the season.
Later in the period Zac MacVoy scored a power-play goal for a 3-1 game at 18:06. The third period saw Jared Brown turn the lamp on with his 10th marker of the season at 12:37. Gregor Hanson assisted. With NMU leading 4-1, the Lakers struck twice. Will Acton scored at 12:55 (4-2) before MacVoy scored an extra-attacker goal at 19:12 for the final score.
Shots were even at 23 for each side. Each team scored one power-play goal on the night. NMU had five power play chances while Lake Superior had seven. Derek Janzen playing between the pipes tonight had 20 saves. Brian Mahoney-Wilson had 19.
NMU will host Michigan State next week in the CCHA first-round playoffs. The series is a best-of-three with the action beginning on Friday night (March 6).
