Soccer Inks Seven To NLI's

 

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Matt Granstrand, the head women’s soccer coach at Northern Michigan University, announces seven high school seniors have signed National Letters of Intent to play soccer for the Wildcats beginning in the fall of 2009. The following student-athletes have signed: Sarah Ferry, Amelia (Emmy) Johnson, KC McCary, Jenna Peplinski, Becky Schmidt, Brekelle Sellers and Kelly Wendels.
 
“We are very pleased with this incoming class of quality student-athletes. We feel that their academic success combined with their level of play as well as overall athleticism will mesh well with our returning student-athletes. We are looking forward to the fall and have high expectations for the upcoming season,” said Granstrand.
 
Sarah Ferry (5-9) a defender from Green Bay Wis. plays for Trisha Rhodes at DePere High School. Ferry’s club team is FC Green Bay which is coached by Quin Ross. In 2007 DePere was the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletics Association (WIAA) Division 1 runner-up. She has been named second-team Bay Conference as well as Green Bay Press Gazette all-area honorable mention. Ferry also played in the Trivoli and Gothia Cups in Sweden and Denmark.
 
Amelia (Emmy) Johnson (5-3) a forward from Saint Michael, Minn. played for Megan Johnson at St. Michael-Albertville High School. Johnson’s club team is the Minnesota Revolution which is coached by Paul Tokar. She was named Offensive MVP in 2006 and 2008. A three-time all-conference selection (2006-07-08) as well as a first-team all-state selection. Johnson was an all-tournament team and a second-team all-metro selection in 2008. She also runs track and was all-conference in the mile and 4x400-meter relay.
 
KC McCary (5-9) a central midfield player from Charlevoix, Mich. plays for Carol Madison at Charlevoix High School. McCary’ club team is the Northstar 91’s coached by Steve Taylor. In 2008 Charlevoix made it to the state semi-finals. She has been named all-conference, all-region, as well as third-team all-state and 2008 Traverse City Record Eagle first team. McCary has also lettered the last two years for both the cross country and basketball teams at Charlevoix.
 
Jenna Peplinski (5-6) a forward/outside/midfielder from Appleton, Wis. plays for Dr. Bill Peplinski at Xavier High School. Peplinski is currently playing for FC Green Bay which is coached by Quinn Ross but has also played for FC Milwaukee and ASC Invasion coached by Rob Harrington and Joe Calling respectively. Peplinski’s club team was state champions in 2008. She was named first team all-conference; first team all-area in 2007. Her team was WIAA Division 2 state champions in 2008. Peplinski also played on the Wisconsin Olympic Development Program team from 2001-07.
 
Becky Schmidt (5-9) a sweeper/center back from Slinger, Wis. plays for Jim Rasmussen at Slinger High School. Schmidt also plays for the Milwaukee Kickers BCU club team which is coached by Dan Peplinski. She has been named Defensive Most Valuable Player, first team all-conference in the Little Ten Conference, as well as her team’s Most Valuable Player.
 
Brekelle Sellers (5-6) a forward/midfielder from Arvada, Colo. plays for Stephanie Carpenter at Ralston Valley High School. Sellers plays for the Colorado Edge Select club team which is coached by Scott Patterson. She has been named Most Valuable Player Offense, first team all-conference, as well as all-state honorable mention. Sellers’ club team is also a state cup finalist.
 
Kelly Wendels (5-6) a forward /outside midfielder from Lake Ann, Mich. plays for Lauren Gentry at Traverse City West High School. Wendels also plays for the Northstar 91’s which is coached by Steve Taylor. She has been named to the all-district as well as the all-conference teams.  Wendels also was named to the Northern Michigan Dream Team as an honorable mention selection.
