Hockey Has Big Weekend
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The winter sports season at Northern Michigan University is quickly coming to an end. This week all the NMU winter teams are in action.
The NMU women’s basketball team (13-12, 8-12 GLIAC) will take on the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State Thursday (Feb. 26) at 6 p.m. in the first game of the doubleheader. At approximately 8 p.m. the NMU men’s team (11-14, 6-14 GLIAC) takes the court in University Center, Mich. Saturday (Feb. 28) the basketball teams move up the road to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to tangle with the Lakers of Lake Superior State. The women’s game will get things started at 1 p.m. while the men’s game is set to begin at approximately 3 p.m. For the women they still have a chance to make the GLIAC Tournament while the men will conclude the season with the two games.
Friday (Feb. 27) is the beginning of a busy weekend for the hockey team. There will be a Blue Line Luncheon beginning at 11:45 a.m. at Upfront and Company. The event is open to the public and the cost is $8.50 per person. Featured will be the seniors on the NMU hockey team. Later that day the Wildcats take on the Lakers of Lake Superior State in the first game of the weekend series. Events surrounding Friday’s game includes a Wildcat/Blue Line Club members social in the Wildcat Room and a silent auction. Junior trading cards will be given out before the game. Saturday (Feb. 28) is the second game of the weekend tilt against the Lakers. It will be Senior Night as the senior trading cards will be passed out before the game. There will be a fourth period reception at the Casa Calabria after the game. The puck will drop for both games at 7:35 p.m.
The NMU Athletic Department and the Voice of the NMU Wildcats – The Point (100.3 FM) are offering ticket specials for this weekend’s series against the Lakers. Tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for students, a group ticket price of $5 each with a minimum of 10 people and NMU students are free with their ID.
Competing this weekend the NMU women’s indoor track and field team is at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships. Action gets underway at Saginaw Valley State Friday (Feb. 27) at 3 p.m. and will conclude Saturday (Feb. 28) beginning at 11 a.m.
The NMU men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams take to the trails for the NCAA Central Regional Championships which are to be held at Michigan Tech Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 28-March 1).
