OXFORD, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University hockey team picked up three points on the weekend against the Miami RedHawks with a 1-1 deadlock Saturday afternoon. Miami won the shootout (2-1) to pick up the extra point.
NMU is now 12-15-5 overall on the season and 9-12-5-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Miami is now 18-9-5 and 16-6-4-2 respectively.
Nick Sirota gave NMU the 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season at 13:12 of the first period. Tyler Gron and Andrew Cherniwchan assisted on the goal. The RedHawks tied the game at 1:14 of the second period on a power-play goal by Carter Camper. The third period as well as the overtime period went scoreless.
Mark Olver was the first player in the shootout as he made his shot. Miami’s Camper made his shot next to tie the shootout at one-all. Gregor Hanson for NMU and Jarod Palmer for the RedHawks both missed in the next round. The third round saw the ‘Cats Erik Gustafsson miss his shot before Pat Cannone made his to give the RedHawks the shootout win.
Miami once again dominated the shots with a 47-7 count. The RedHawks scored the lone power-play goal in five chances while the ‘Cats were 0-6 with the extra skater. Brian Stewart picked up first star of the game honors with 46 saves, which included six in the overtime period. Connor Knapp of Miami had six saves.
The ‘Cats will conclude the regular season next week with a series against the Lake Superior Lakers. The puck will drop Friday and Saturday (Feb. 27-28) nights at 7:35 p.m.
