MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Northern Michigan University announces the Athletes of the Month for January. Kelli Vander Baan, from the swimming and diving team, was selected as the Female Athlete of the Month while Mark Olver, from the hockey team, was named the Male Athlete of the Month.
The sophomore from Highland, Mich. placed second on both boards against Grand Valley State in NMU’s lone meet during the month. Vander Baan scored 259.27 points on the 1-meter which was good enough for a NCAA Division II national qualifying standard. She tallied 248.18 points on the 3-meter. Vander Baan was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for her performance against the Lakers.
Olver, a sophomore from Burnaby, B.C., recorded five goals and seven assists for 12 points during the month. He averaged one-and-a-half points-per game tying him for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) lead in points and placing him eighth in the country for January. He was named the CCHA Offensive Player of the Week for his four points (2-2) against the Wisconsin Badgers the first weekend of the month. He ended the month with five points on a goal and four assists in a series sweep of the Western Michigan Broncos (Jan. 30-31). Olver also picked up the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month for January. He scored two game-winning goals, most among CCHA players in January, and also recorded both a power-play and shorthanded tally. The forward notched multiple points in three games and had at least one point in six of eight games in the month.
