MARQUETTE, Mich. – It seems like clockwork that when the calendar flips to a new year the Northern Michigan University hockey team finds its groove for the playoff push. This year is no exception. NMU won its seventh game of 2009 with a 3-0 win over the visiting Bowling Green State University Falcons Friday night at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats are now 7-1-1 for 2009. Throw in the shootout win over Alaska and the ‘Cats have picked up 16 of a possible 18 points.
Overall the ‘Cats are now 10-13-4 on the season and 7-10-4-3 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play. BGSU falls to 9-17-3 and 6-14-1-0 respectively.
After a scoreless first period of action, Andrew Cherniwchan gave the ‘Cats the lead for good with his fourth goal of the season at 5:09. Erik Gustafsson and Mark Olver assisted on the goal. Jared Brown then scored the next two goals for NMU as he tallied his sixth marker of the season just 46 seconds into the third period. Billy Smith and Nick Sirota assisted. Brown then scored his seventh goal of the season at 18:25 into an empty net. Sirota picked up the lone assist.
Brian Stewart picked up his third shutout of the season and sixth of his career with 28 saves on the night. Jimmy Spratt had 20 saves for the Falcons. BGSU had five more shots than the ‘Cats at 28-23. NMU was 0-6 on the power play while BGSU was 0-7.
The two teams will play the second game of the weekend set tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 7) night at 7:35 p.m.
