MARQUETTE— The United States Olympic Education Center has honored three athletes with the title ‘Athlete of the Semester’ for their respective program.
USA Wrestling chose Olympian Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.) as its award winner. The NMU junior finished eighth at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in August. Mango won his first match at 55 kiloggrams against Virgil Munteanu (Romania). He then lost to Park Eun-Chul (Korea) in the quarterfinals and was eliminated from medal contention after Park lost in the semifinals. Additionally, he took home a gold medal at 55kg at the NYAC International Holiday Wrestling Tournament in November. Mango is in his fifth year at the USOEC and was also named to the fall 2008 All-Academic team.
Erin Bartlett (Lakewood, Ohio) is US Speedskating’s honoree. Internationally, In December 2008 she placed fourth at the North American Championships and won an individual gold in the 500 meter race. Nationally, Bartlett finished 16th and 10th at American Cup I and II respectively. She also took fifth place at the U.S. Junior Championships, narrowly missing qualifying for the Junior World Team. Bartlett is in her first year at the USOEC and is a freshman at Northern Michigan University studying sports science.
Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md.) was USA Wrestling’s women’s freestyle wrestling recipient. Also in her first year at the USOEC, Maroulis took home a bronze medal from the Junior World Championships in Turkey in August, and finished eighth at the Senior World Championships in Japan in October. She also grabbed gold at the Senior World Team Trials. Most notably, Maroulis is a senior at Marquette Senior High School competing at the highest levels of competition.
