Wrestlers compete at Schultz
MARQUETTE –United States Olympic Education Center men’s Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle wrestling team members will compete Feb. 5-8 at the 11th annual Dave Schultz Memorial International Open in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The tournament was started in February 1999 in honor of the late Olympic and World Champion Dave Schultz. It will feature the top international athletes from as many as 30 countries, including powerhouse programs from Bulgaria, Russia, China, Cuba and Kazakhstan.
“This event is huge for our team because it’s the first international competition of the season. It gives my guys a chance to know how the competition at an international level goes. We should have an advantage because it’s in our country and we don’t need to make big changes to the time zone,” said assistant coach Jim Gruenwald.
Greco-Roman wrestlers competing in the tournament include Northern Michigan University junior Spencer Mango (St. Louis, Mo.) at 55 kilograms; graduate student Jacob Curby (LaGrange, Ill.), sophomore Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah) and senior Kerry Regner at 66 kg; seniors Cheney Haight (Orem, Utah) and Andy Bisek (Chaska, Minn.), sophomores Jon Drendel (North Aurora, Ill.) and Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Az.), graduate student Jake Fisher (Platte City, Mo.) and Harry Lester at 74 kg.
“I think Harry and Spencer can win their weight classes. I have confidence in all these guys and expect them to finish at least in the top 10,” said Jim Gruenwald.
Rounding out the rest of the weight classes are NMU senior Charles Betts (St. Michael, Minn.) and junior Talon Knox at 84 kg and junior Peter Gournaridis (Leominster, Mass.) at 96 kg.
USOEC freestyle wrestlers competing at the tournament include NMU Junior Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk, Wis.) at 48 kg; freshman Beth Johnson (Garden City, Kan.) at 55 kg; Marquette Senior High senior Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md.) at 51 kg; MSH senior Adeline Gray (Denver, Colo.) at 72 kg; and senior Veronica Carlson (Addison, Ill.) 63 kg.
