MARQUETTE – The United States Olympic Education Center has named 20 athletes to the All-Academic team for the fall 2008 semester. The athletes earned a 3.0 grade point average for the semester.
Greco-Roman wrestlers filled seven spots: Northern Michigan University post-baccalaureate student Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio); seniors Chaz Betts (St. Michael, Ore.), Cheney Haight (Orem, Utah) and Kevin Lozano (Jefferson, La.); juniors John Dibala (Silverton, Ore.) and Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.); and sophomore Zach Nielsen (Zimmermann, Minn.). They are joined by women’s freestyle wrestlers NMU freshman Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas), sophomore Lindsey Brooks (Houston, Texas) and senior Nicole Darrow (Lanesboro, Mass.).
Weightlifters named to the team include freshmen Sage Burgener (Bonsall, Calif.) and Caleb Ward (Wichita Falls, Texas); sophomore Chelsea Kyle (Sandusky, Ohio); and seniors Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.) and Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.)
“The All-Academic team really speaks about the quality of the athletes,” said weightlifting coach Andy Tysz. “The athletes are realizing and understanding the program and learning that it is about more than just training to compete. They’re also preparing for life after competition.”
