KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team keeps rolling along in 2009. NMU swept its second series of 2009 with a 4-3 win over the Western Michigan Broncos Saturday night in Lawson Ice Arena. Both of NMU’s sweeps have come on the road the first one was at Wisconsin four weekends ago.
With the win the Wildcats improve to 9-13-4 overall on the season and 6-10-4-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The Broncos are now 7-15-5 and 4-11-5-1 respectively.
WMU struck first with a goal by Kyle O’Kane at 1:11 of the first period. NMU tied the game at 19:16 on a goal by Ben Lindemulder for his first career marker as a ‘Cat. Mark Olver and Erik Gustafsson assisted on the goal. The Broncos took the lead back (2-1) on a goal by Sean Weaver at 14:53 of the second period.
The ‘Cats would score three goals in a row to take a 4-2 lead. Phil Fox scored a power-play goal at 18:13 of the second period for his sixth of the season for a tie game (2-2). Blake Cosgrove and Tim Hartung assisted. Fox scored his second goal of the night, also on the power play, at 19:59 to give the ‘Cats the lead for good (3-2) for his seventh of the season. Cosgrove and Ray Kaunisto assisted. Justin Florek added an insurance goal at 11:57 for a 4-2 game. Andrew Cherniwchan and Gustafsson assisted on Florek’s fifth goal of the season. WMU added a goal a little over a minute later by Max Campbell for the final score of the night.
NMU was 2-7 on the power play while WMU was 1-6. Shots were almost even again as the home team had the slight edge (29-27). Brian Stewart went the distance for the ‘Cats between the pipes as he had 26 saves on the night. Jerry Kuhn for the Broncos turned away 23 shots.
NMU will be at home next weekend (Feb. 6-7) against the Bowling Green State University Falcons. The puck will drop both nights at 7:35 p.m.
