MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team is playing its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) home series this weekend at the Berry Events Center since the end of November. The first night went well against the Alaska Nanooks as the Wildcats took the game 2-0. NMU is now 4-1-0 since the beginning of the New Year.
The ‘Cats improve to 7-13-3 overall on the season and 4-10-3-2 in the CCHA. Alaska is now 11-9-5 and 9-8-4-3 respectively.
After a scoreless first period, Jared Brown gave the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season. The goal was unassisted at 2:25. Holding onto a 1-0 lead entering the third period, the ‘Cats received an insurance goal from Billy Smith for his first of the season at 8:58. Smith was playing in his first game since the end of November tonight. Brown and Nick Sirota picked up the assists. Brown for his play tonight picked up first star of the game honors.
Brian Stewart with his 21 saves on the night picked up his fifth career shutout and second of the season. Stewart had six saves in the first period, eight in the second and seven in the third. Chad Johnson for the Nanooks had 22 saves for the game. NMU was 0-5 on the power play while Alaska was 0-3. The ‘Cats had 24 shots while the Nanooks had 21 for the game.
The two teams will drop the puck for the second game of the weekend tilt at 7:35 p.m. Saturday night (Jan. 24).
