Krista Squiers Leads Wildcats At Lake State Classic

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s indoor track and field team competed at the Lake State Classic Saturday (Jan. 17). No team score was kept.
Krista Squiers led the NMU athletes with a top performance in the weight throw. Her throw of 16.54-meters (54-3 ¼) set a new NMU record in the process. In the other field events, Natalie Bertucci and Bailey Franklin tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 1.58. Renee Hays won the shot put with a throw of 11.81while teammates Franklin (9.17) and Paris Malin (8.95) were sixth and seventh respectively.
Brittnee Balbierz with a time of 7.59 won the 55 dash. Bertucci picked up a win in the 55 hurdles with a clocking of 8.56. Teammates Melissa Christensen (9.28) and Franklin (9.60) were third and fourth respectively. NMU took the top two spots in the 400 as Catherine Angeli won the event with a time of 1:01.67 over fellow Wildcat Rachel Williams (1:02.26). 
Maegan Hendershot was the top placing NMU runner in the 800 as she was fourth with a time of 2:26.35.   Angeli picked up another victory by taking the top spot in the 200 with a time of 26.60. NMU also had the next two places with Balbierz (26.95) and Bertucci (27.75). 
The mile saw Kristen Schulz run a 5:32.63 which was good for a third-place showing. Bisig (5:33.91) was fourth and Nora Kiilunen (5:34.28) fifth in the mile. NMU had two runners in the top four in the 3,000 as Erin McCulloch won the event with a time of 11:17.27 while teammate Jessica Krob (11:38.05) was fourth. 
NMU went one-two in the distance medley relay. The winning relay of Bibiane Mahy, Bisig, Kiilunen and Rebecca Holmquist ran a 13:11.80. NMU’s second relay in the event ran a 13:47.28 and the members of the relay were Kristen Hoklas, Schulz, Nicole Bougher and Jenny Wiedmeyer. Franklin, Williams, Balbierz and Angeli ran a 4:12.06 to take the 4x400 relay. The ‘Cats also had a second relay in the event as Christensen, Hendershot, Erin VanEnkevort and Stephanie Enderby ran a 4:19.54 for a third-place finish.
NMU will be back in action again on Saturday (Jan. 31) for its only home event of the season the Northern Challenge. The event will begin at 11 a.m. in the Superior Dome.
